dot.Me – Will .Me be a HIT or a MISS?

These days there’s a lot of talk about a new repurposed domain extension called dot-Me.

Many new domainers (some old) are buying up .me domains with great enthusiasm. Some of these buyers are not even aware that .me  is a ccTLD (county code TLD) assigned to Montenegro. Now it is being repackaged as .me,  just like .tv or .ws etc.

While its always hard to predict how a new TLD will perform long-term, but given the fate of most new TLDs it is quite obvious that .me will not be a challenger to establisged TLDs such as .com, .net etc. It may however be good for certain keywords that fit the word ‘me’ such as insure.me, date.me (not hate.me), about.me to name a few. If you are buying some .me domains then stick to the ones that make good sense with .me at the end.

There is so much hype about .me that its hard to let go the urge to register a few but remember this extension will most likey get almost zero type-in traffic. Unless you have a great plan to develop your .me domain, either stay away or don’t buy too many as it will be hard to pay all those annual renewal fees for domains that don’t make money while parked.

Remember registries and registrars make money selling domains, so they will probably not educate you before you hit the regsiter button. You should educate yourself by going to domain sites that discuss these trends without pushing you to buy these kind of domains.
